What do pizza coupons tell us about why America (and the world for that matter) loves Homer Simpson? The Simpson's is on course to become the longest running prime time TV show in American history, outlasting even the now ancient Gunsmoke. Why is that? How did this cartoon, which started out as nothing but a crudely drawn short filler on the Tracey Ullman variety show way back when win the hearts of hundreds of millions of people? Well, a lot of it has to do with Homer, the father in the show.
The episode wasn't even about pizza or coupons at all. That part was just a side gag in the overall plot. But it captured Homer's good natured goofiness just about as well any other other joke in the show's history. What happened is that Homer was going through the mail when he came across one of those coupon packs. He was rifling through it, exclaiming his wonder at the various offers, when he came across the a pizza coupon, which caused him to squeal with delight: "Ooh, look Lisa! Doughey's has pizzas 2 for the price of 1!" Eight year old Lisa, the voice of reason in the show, replied: "But, Dad! Doughey's is the worst pizza in town!" Clearly, Lisa just didn't get it. So Homer patiently explained it to her: "Yeah, but Lisa, you get TWO of them!" Homer's delight at pizza coupons promising twice as much of the worst pizza in town for the price of one perfectly sums up why we all love to watch him. We can laugh at his imbecility, because we've all known people who exhibited the same sort of thought processes. And now we can get pizza at a special price from our very own and favorite Papa Johns. Papa Johns Pizza Coupons can make the party very inexpensive.
